The compilation of a history of Hampton Hill Parish was among the plans of the Centenary Committee to mark St. James's hundredth year. The history became a parish-wide project organised by a specially formed group, the St. James's Centenary History Group. The idea originated form the late Mr. Bernard Garside's Hampton History Group of which several of St. James's parishoners were members.

The book, called 'The Birth and Growth of Hampton Hill', was edited and co-ordinated by Mrs. Margery Orton. Much local research was carried out by members of the group using the early parish magazines, dating from 1885 and the Vestry Minutes from 1964. They visited reference libraries, made copies of old maps, went through back numbers of local papers and visited elderly residents who had lived in the district for many years. Many people helped in many different ways, some took photographs, some lent old snaps, others prepared exhibits for the exhibition which accompanied the lecture given by Mrs. Orton on 11th December, 1963 to inaugurate the centenary year.

The book was published on 20th March 1965 by the Parochial Church Council of St. James. It contains one hundred and twenty pages with fourteen illustrations and a folding map, took twenty months to compile and sold at 12s. 6d. Its nine chapters are packed with fascinationg details about life in the old village of Hampton Hill.
